That's actually something else that I've noticed - even the words that I knew and accepted as different aren't used consistently. I knew that Americans spelled the word "Theater" from things like... Dream Theater, and that just looks weird when you spell it with an -re instead (as, while I'm on the subject, does "Iron Saviour"). And yet Boston has a theatre district instead, and a Newton Centre station, and countless other things.
