To my knowledge, I've always been like that! Literally my very first memory is of me (toddler) with my parents at their friends' house, and they left me alone with a little home tabletop slot machine thing the friends had while they were hanging out or watching something or whatever they were doing. I went through half the nearby bowl of dimes by the time they were almost ready to go, and then I panicked because I thought they'd notice all the missing dimes and I'd get in trouble. I was torn between trying to win them back and the realization that sinking more in would only make the problem worse (yay for my very first memory already understanding how gambling addiction works) and I ultimately decided to not say anything and just be a terrified ball of nerves for the next several days as if waiting at any moment for them to notice.

After that, I became Chuckie from Rugrats, and could always be counted on as the voice of "I don't know about this, you guys, my parents said we shouldn't..." and probably snitching if the others went and did it anyway. You can guess how popular that made me, and that only sent me deeper into a feedback loop shame spiral which I'm sure has nothing whatsoever to do with the sorts of present-day interests that involve this icon.
