A gutsy performance. (Sorry Chris, had to steal it from you)
Well, I just got back from seeing Shaun of the Dead.
Going to it in the hope that it would cheer me up was rather a mistake, really. It started off fine and I laughed a lot, especially at the parts with Dylan Moran's character (also called David.) And it was interesting that Tamsin Grieg had a cameo appearance as well - the way it was done made it seem like a reference to Black Books.
I know I was warned it was gory, I know that, but I wasn't prepared for the part approaching the end of the film when it suddenly became very "dark"... namely the part when Dylan Moran was torn apart by zombies. His character was rather dislikeable, but to have been shown zombies reaching in to him and pulling out his entrails piece by piece, followed by slowly tearing his head and limbs from his body... it was as bad as anything from Braindead to me (apart from maybe the bit where someone's legs are removed).
Why does gore (even the gore that others laugh at as being "obviously Kool-aid") scare me so much? It's not as if I abhor violence in any way - I see enough of it in Quake 3, for example (mostly from my character :( ). I think that it's that things stay in my mind for a good while, as anyone who's watched a comedy with me before will agree - if there's something that amuses me, I can barely stop laughing for weeks. It must be the same with this...
No, maybe I'm totally spineless. :(
Oh, fortunately it lightened up a bit near the end. *twitch*

And while I've seen my fair share of animes and hence am acquainted with the sudden mood swings... I think Shaun of the Dead just sort of tried to be funny at moments that were appropriate.
It wasn't a bad film but hardly the masterpiece people seem to have hailed it as - and as to an attempt to cheer yourself up, I'm sure you won't be surprised that I think that was foolish. :P
