A more appropriate question, from my point of view at least, is why America dropped the -do suffix! Though I can't explain why it was invented with that name either.

I think Australia also had a series of the same name (there are bits of it on Youtube) - the UK one had four series with completely different actors each time, but I only remembered it very vaguely until it turned up on one of these DVDs.
