I do remember that vaguely, but until you mentioned that I would have said that I was certain that we allowed self-nomination on Aces when we played it in school. I don't know what you might have done to warrant disallowing it outright!

I take it that you had the same rules in your own year? As the rules seem to be definitely tied to one region or school, rather than individual people, for some reason.
