Perhaps we're made of tougher stuff :) Though from what I've seen of American weather, it can get a lot more... extreme... than Scotland's usual comfortable dreariness. I met someone I know from Nepal when he was staying here for a year, and even he said that the Boston winter was too cold for him.
What happened was that the weather warned us all of the worst case scenario, much like you saw from your apartment complex... there was a chance that we could have been hit a lot worse with it, but it suddenly changed direction by about ninety degrees and went out to sea instead.
