Every computer at the university uses Office 2007, so I had no excuse not to use it when communicating on class projects (it was a pain in the ass when I was still on Office and got sent .docx files -- not sure if it's included it in recent versions).
That said -- always use the old format when communicating with the FE gang. And if I want to play it safe and figure no one else will be editing it, I'll just play it safe and PDF the file.
It's strange how it's still regarded as something very awkward, years after its introduction... I now just have to wait around for them to convert. It's to be expected when you change a very well established format like that, though.
Some clients even like to send screenshots as a paste into DOCX... though their unbeatable record is of sending a PDF of a scan of a printed screenshot of a list of text.
