Hah, Dagger of Amon Ra's stupid elaborate deaths :) They were entertaining but so preposterous that they kind of jolted the dangerous feeling out of the game - the Colonel's Bequest ones are at the opposite end of the scale (until the laundry room) and are a bit bland. I think you're right that what each game did badly, the other did a bit better - or at least differently.
