Silent Hill

I thought I'd do an update to prove I'm not dead. My project report is now at over 20,000 words and is approaching seventy pages, and I've reached the stage where I'm just picking at it rather than writing anything meaningful. So I've decided to leave that and work on something else - the trouble is that with Treasure Tower almost finished as well, I have a distinct lack of projects to keep me amused.

Therefore I've been going round the IMDB in between applying for jobs. The first point I noticed is that I can't believe that this is on it. I suppose now that it's had a DVD release it has every right to be, but it's still rather surreal.

Much more sensibly, I am finding myself most excited about the upcoming release of Silent Hill. Throughout its development, the plot seems to have been shifted around multiple times, but it now seems that it'll follow the storyline of the first game with Harry replaced by a new character called Rose. (And while it might be a strange decision, this might be for the best, because at least there's no possiblity of including the infamous "radio" line.) It takes elements from the first three games, though.

Have a look at the trailer - I'm just amazed how closely it follows the introductory scene of the game (though the graveyard scene later on looks a bit weird). However, it looks to be breaking new ground in being the first game-to-film conversion that isn't catastrophically terrible. And I'm sure having Sean Bean in it can't hurt.

Yay, Sean Bean. He did voice acting for the new game Chris and I are hooked on (Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion) and it's always weird to hear his voice coming out of a cartoon. It is, however, also nice to have good voice acting in a video game. Other voice actors in the game include Patrick Stewart, who is super cool.

Also, since you're not dead, perhaps you'll enjoy this clip of a drunken riverdancer busting in on a DDR game: http://www.wornsneakers.com/stuff/videos/3/02/riverddr.html

I think of you every time I see that trailer. Haven't decided if I'll actually see the movie, though.

Doom House is basically "SomethingAwful.com: The Movie" take from that what you will.

Silent Hill looks awsome, all the monsters are makeup and costumes, no CGI involved. FUCK YEAH! My main problem is using Pyramid Head in the movie (and this is a slight spoiler for those that havn't finished SH2). PH, removed from a male protagonist, specifically James, looses much of his power and becomes a cool looking, but meaningless, monster. Seeing as PH is a manifestation of Jame's anger, his impotence and conflicting emasculation and lack of sexual gratification - simply PH is a phallic looking moster, big knives (more willy like things for penetrating) that "rapes" and tears apart the female monsters of the game. This is a specific reference to late events in the story so I'll leave it at that, cos if you played you know what I mean, and if you didn't it doesn't matter.

Anyhoo how they can make a primarily male symbol work in a female context will be interesting certainly. Maybe they got PH confused with Valtiel who has a more general use in the series. Hmm.

Well acording to the game's director he's essentially SH's caretaker. The turning of the pipes is a symbol of the transition between the worlds, whcih I guess we are to assume he has some hand in, and sometimes if you die he removes Heather's corpse. It's also been speculated that he's one of the scondary gods (like Lobsel Vith) that are mentioned in the church in SH3.

Now one thing that is interesting is of ourse his almost direct resemblence to PH only without that fucky head wear. Doubt they're the same person though, as Valtiel is passive to a fault, and PH is incredibly violent. Might go play SH3 again and see what I can spot. Flawed game, but it has the best line in the whole series. "They look like monsters to you?" Boy did that mess with my head.

THIS answers a lot of the aboe questions, and now am completely sporting a full on chubby for the Silent Hill movie. Some spoilers, but the way they've interpreted the story and monsters - holy shit it's amazing. They use the basic motifs of the series and craft it to their own. WAIT TILL YOU SEE WHY THE MONSTERS ARE THE WAY THEY ARE!
Possibly the best inerpretation I could hope for actually, and they made use of (slight spoiler) my favourite SH3 quote in their interpretation. Fuck yeah.
