I had perhaps the most disturbing dream possible last night now that I think about it, though it didn't seem like that at the time. Still, I'll forget about it and return to the real world - why has my battery power gone all the way down to 13%?! Someone must have been messing with my computer while I was out and forgot to plug it in. I'm surprised it got down that far, usually it gives up at about 50.
We had another video evening a couple of nights ago - just about the only thing to do in Inverurie since the cinema's conversion to an awful "cocktail bar" years ago. It turned in to a night of Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit. Only Nick Park could make films like those - he has a great sense of parody. There are so many things that children just shouldn't see in Chicken Run, though.
The junk mail is reaching record levels - I had 78 of them when I didn't check the mail for about 4 days. I could just switch to another address, but too many people know me as wongchungbang. In addition, I keep getting e-mails from some AOL-using twit who types in Newspeak and in all caps, as if that wasn't enough. I've stopped replying to him, even though I thought of a really good response.
The abandonware site seems to have disappeared - that was the only site I really tried to be aggressive on, largely because there were so many people that were just asking for it (I still flinch as I remember some things that they posted there... I'm ashamed to be of the same species.) I still have over 600MB of programs from the site, though - which some people might regard as a little sad, but never mind.
I'm trying to record tapes from CDs to play in the car at the moment, but the quality of the transferred tracks is pretty awful. Either my stereo has deteriorated since I was last here, or I've bought rubbish tapes. I'll try it elsewhere.
Yet more letters are being sent to places in Inverurie and Aberdeen, but I haven't received any replies yet. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying doing pretty much nothing. This morning, I filled in time by trying to resurrect my brother's computer. Technically it's superior to my own, but it runs with just about the same efficiency thanks to bad maintenance. I tried running SpyBot on it and it found something in the region of 280 separate problems, but about a page of unknown programs are still loaded on startup.
I'd forgotten how good Unreal Tournament was - have to get myself a new computer so that I can play that down in St Andrews. My present computer can actually run it, but not incredibly well. Anyway, what I've been doing is reviving old maps - awkwardly, I have my old map files but not the external packages such as textures, music, and so on, and if a package is missing then the map flatly refuses to load. Piecing together "fake" packages so that the map can run isn't too difficult sometimes, though. One map I'd completely forgotten I'd made was "DarkIsland", a unfinished map with a jetty and a lighthouse. When you fall in to the sea it gives the message "Gonnae no' dae that?". I've got no memory of putting that in at all. The only map I ever released is still pending review at Nali City after about two years.
It's strange the amount of ancient relics that I've found both on and around that computer, as well. I can't imagine when it was last cleaned. Sonic R is still on it - a game with music that makes
gr33bo's CD collection look refined and tasteful. Also, I found a cover disk from July 1993 in the drawer. It had a demo of Prince of Persia 2.
Another thing I've been playing through recently is Final Fantasy X. Perhaps it's just the result of an overdose of Reloaded, but I never realised how much it borrows from The Matrix. Auron is pretty much a lighter-skinned version of Morpheus, there's the bit near the start with the huge jump across the collapsing road where everything slo-o-o-ows down, and then the thing running along the wall a bit later on. I was half-expecting the Summoner to appear wearing a trenchcoat and sunglasses. Then again, pretty much everything now takes elements from that film.
More importantly, I got myself a packet of Country Crisp (raspberry type) yesterday. It's pretty nice, but I don't think it can replace my Crunchy Nut Corn Flakes. Sorry!
