My speakers have gone!
Jul. 28th, 2004 09:01 pmIt seems that every time I write a journal entry, it's about another computer breaking - a hideous disease has befallen three of the machines in my room. The Amstrad, the oldest and most senile of them all, produced three grevious errors in succession today: Hard drive detection failure, hard drive controller failure and hard drive recalibration failure. Happily, it then forgot that it was broken and worked anyway, with all its data still intact (a full hard drive of 20MB).
You might wonder why I keep these ancient wheezing computers rather than send them off to the computer equivalent of the old folks' home (Inverurie Rubbish Tip). Like everyone observes when they see my jacket, I'm a hoarder and can't bring myself to throw things out. And besides, I'm confident that a lot of things on them will be pretty unique - I may, for example, be the only person left in the world with a copy of that pathetic little puzzle game where the player was a red grinning spider. That's something to be proud of.
I was given the responsibility of making cheeseburgers at work today. It went fairly well, but I was so overcome with relief at the fact that I didn't blow up the kitchen that I forgot to put cheese on them, which some people may think is a fairly vital ingredient.
This ball mouse seems really heavy and awkward after the luxury of having an optical mouse - it's now been taken (temporarily, I'll make sure of that) for use on my dad's latest midlife crisis fuel, a laptop with a projector. My speakers have also gone, so it feels like this computer's been fairly crippled.
We've just watched Pirates of the Caribbean on the wall of the dining room, which would have been a lot more enjoyable if my dad wasn't the sort of person who asks questions throughout the entire length of the film. It's utterly excruciating. But it's amazing how much even things like Spider Solitaire can be livened up by playing with electronic cards as large as a normal computer screen. Am I just easily amused?
One final note - I am going to copy over Notepad from my old computer. This WinXP version is just useless. I thought that a text editing program would be rather difficult to get wrong.
