Water, water everywhere...
Aug. 19th, 2004 10:56 pmThere hasn't been a thunderstorm like the one last night for ages. Last time there was something like that, half of Inverurie woke up to find their modems no longer worked, so I had to make a hurried escape from the Internet and unplug everything.
Apparently it continued throughout the night and woke everyone in Scotland up except me - according to my sister, she came through and tried to wake me up after she'd been woken by it, but even that failed to rouse me.
I awoke and was phoned by Susan, who warned me that I would have to come in to work by the back roads because my usual road was flooded. Now, I was expecting that to mean that there was a bit of water on the road impassable to a Ford Fiesta, but when I went to work, I was rather surprised to find that a lake had fallen out of the sky overnight and landed next to the golf club.
There was water from the edge of the car park all the way to the bridge to the neighbouring town. It was quite incredible. None of the road was visible at all - and yet there were still people out playing golf. They must be mad. Still, it's nowhere important, only Kintore.
Jamie and I have been looking through the course catalogue for next year and trying to submit his module choices. Are there any modules that he should avoid in first year Maths? Anyway, that's not so important now because when we were quite close to finishing, the server conked out and we couldn't continue. That's the reliability I've come to expect from the St Andrews network.
