At the CIC

After a period of general limbo in which we were all working from home since the middle of May, our company has a new office space now, in the impressive and impressively-named Cambridge Innovation Center. The process of getting in properly for the first time was reasonably painless - I had to have my residence card photocopied in return for my entrance card and key fob to be let into the office. In addition to those, I also received a Cambridge Innovation Center mug, which further contained a collection of boiled sweets and a miniature three-foot tape measure for some reason. They were very friendly and said to come to them with any questions, which I haven't yet despite the obvious one being "Why have you given me all this useless rubbish?".

We're in pretty much the same style of office that we were in before, an open-plan arrangement with several other companies around us, though we hope that they're not going to be as loud as the ones we've experienced before. Actually, as soon as I typed that a Gregorian chant started up from the other end of the room - I think someone has a phone ringtone that almost rivals the 56K modem one that we were all driven mad by a few months ago. But the room's right opposite the kitchen area, well situated for any raids during the day.

I wandered around aimlessly for a while because I didn't quite get the hang of holding the fob in exactly the right way to be read correctly by the entrance pad the first couple of times, but was confident that any amount of looking lost I may have exhibited was counterbalanced by the way I was carrying a briefcase - these always make you seem like you know what you're doing. I used the same principle during my first week of university, carrying an empty one around just to give the illusion of confidence. On the third try I got in, being the first one into work at 10:30, and took the better-looking of the two seats in the partition that we had reserved. Two seats in a three-person company - this could be a whole new incentive to get to work on time.
