I had an alien apocalypse dream last night. I don't normally get those, but it may have been brought on by a combination of reading a sentence or two about Independence Day in passing when I was on TV Tropes yesterday, and my brain rebelling against me for feeding it with the rest of what I found on it. I managed to keep less of this one in my mind than the last time, and it's not clear whether some events in it were directly related to each other or not, but I'll give it a go...

I don't know if I was ever shown how the invasion started - the first thing that I remember was that I was on the above-ground section of Boston's subway (if this makes any sense), which was crowded because of the number of people trying to flee the destruction. I don't know why they chose the T to do that - you would think it would be quicker to fit a larger-than-average snail with a saddle and reins and ride that out of the city. Still, that's where I was, and I was on the phone to my parents - I'm not sure whether the unseen aliens were attacking worldwide or if they were just destroying Boston and leaving the rest of the world substantially improved. My mum was asking me about the weather for some reason, and with the Blackadder gene fully intact even in a time of crisis, I remember answering "I would be slightly more concerned about the weather were it not for the giant bombs falling everywhere".

I'm very unclear about the order of events of the middle of the dream, but we had made it to a large sky-rise building, which contained the flat belonging to [livejournal.com profile] quadralien (who doesn't live in a flat). On the bottom floor was a large office area, and I remember taking my youngest brother through a room full of people working at desks laid out like in a lecture theatre, and into a room at the back where apparently I worked, to get something I needed. I then realized that the far side of the building was gone - it and a huge expanse of where the city once was beyond it had been completely vaporized by a falling bomb, leaving half of the building still standing and apparently structurally stable.

We stayed on the ground floor, thinking we were safe, and then after seeing a crowd of people running away outside, realized that there was something under the ground that was going to tip the building over. We rushed outside and looked up to see people jumping out of the ruined side of the building on to the grass below - I remember seeing the children on the fourth floor falling out and hoping to be caught, but people were too panicked to pay attention to them and just let them fall to the ground. Somehow I knew that I'd been separated from my brothers and that I wouldn't be able to find them again.

Then it was the evening. Wandering around outside in the darkness, I arrived at the remains of another apartment - a vague set of high walls with no roof, looking like it had been ruined for centuries - and walked inside to find a girl called Yvonne who used to be in my class in the academy and who I might have talked to once or twice in our entire existences - I'm not sure why my mind chose her to be in the dream. We walked around the similarly grey stone environment together, up and down stairs, searching for other people, but eventually went back to the remains of the apartment.

While we had been gone, two more survivors had arrived - a couple who looked like they were from Eastern Europe - and they had built a small fire to keep themselves warm. We sat down with them, and the woman began playing a stringed instrument that I didn't recognize - I was irritated by the noise at first, but soon relaxed and grew to appreciate the music amongst the silence of the rest of the dream world. Somebody opened a case behind me, and took a flask out of it, saying "You'll feel better if you drink this". Aware that I was still teetotal but thinking that there was never a better time to start, or something, I hesitantly took a sip of the liquid inside, and then instantly fell backwards asleep - and in doing that, woke up into the real world again in the same instant.

I promise I'll tell you when I next have a remotely happy dream, as well.
