The Julyth of Four

As I'm now in America I think I should culturally-insensitively wish you all a happy 4th of July, but I'll split it into a happy Independence Day for Americans and a happy otherwise meaningless date for everyone else. Anyway, we get a day off work today. Every Wednesday should be a day off, it's been fantastic.

We got up in the afternoon and Whitney made some ridiculously patriotic waffles using the iron toaster thing that we got at Bed Bath and Beyond the other day purely so that we could use our "$25 off a total purchase of $125" voucher. Apparently you're meant to wear red, white and blue on this day, but the only clothing of that description that I own has some obvious problems.

And about five hours after we got up it was the evening, and we went around to one of Whitney's friends' flat to watch some large fireworks and people being rained on. I really thought I'd use the day off more productively, but sometimes you just need to waste a day...

There's nothing wrong with wishing people 'Happy Wednesday' no matter where they may be. And I think there are probably a lot of people over here who are quite pleased about not living in a country run by George Bush.

I was in the audience for yesterday's UK 'Deal or No Deal' and they had a 4th July special, with flags all around the studio, all the contestants in cowboy hats for the guys and neckscarves and hair plaits for the girls, and we were all given flags to wave in the audience. The usual contestant selection music was also replaced with the theme from 'Rawhide'.

Someone on the internet likened it to German Deal or No Deal doing a VE Day special with everyone in bowler hats.

That does sound really weird. But American holidays are now everywhere - in my first year of university my hall did a special dinner for Thanksgiving, and then didn't bother recognizing Burns' Night.

Yes, I forgot that you were in Melville that year too - you could have taken them up to Market Street and shown them the butcher's shop window that looks like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It always has a couple of stomachs.

That T-shirt causes nothing but problems - people either talk to me in Russian or ask me for directions, as it's very similar to a lot of event staff T-shirts (with the subtle different spellings of "STAFF" and "RUSSIA").

Oh lord, the butcher's shop. That was the first butcher shop that I'd ever seen in my life. It was disturbing and fascinating. Whole sides of cow just hanging in the window. I never went in though.
