It's not really scary at all for the first half, but the second half does have a few...moments.

The inventory if purely to force you to return to, and therefore bond with, the flat (or if you prefer "The Room), as is the fact that the room heals you while you're there. For story purposes feeling some some of connection, or at least feeling safe, is very important.
