New frontiers in dental practice

After only being advised to do it for the last ten years or so, I've finally been trying to get into the extra step in dental care - Whitney already thinks I'm obsessive about brushing, but because my mouth is apparently the wrong shape and I have too many teeth, I've been trying to actually use the reels of dental tape that I'm always handed after my biannual appointments for having my teeth scraped at with pickaxes.
Trouble is I'm really not sure how to do it - the woman at the dentist never seems to have much difficulty when operating on me, but from what I can tell, getting it in the right place appears to rely on having one hand growing out the back of your throat, and then it's an exercise in gently sawing down until a sufficiently impressive amount of blood has been drawn from your gums. But I'm told that it gets easier and less painful with practice.
