I don't think I've actually broken into tears of laughter at the hysterical, dazzling oddity of something before, but stumbling across Tony Kakko singing the theme music from the Pokemon cartoon did it.

Haha, I watched the cartoon and played the games, and I never really grew out of it. And with Tony Kakko... It's a dream come true. xD

Hope you picked the Fire-type starter, because this Gym is METAL!

Seriously, that's amazing. :P

Heh, in the elemental rock-paper-scissors of Pokemon, Metal is an element type (well, technically it's referred to as Steel, but the joke wouldn't've worked then :P). It's pretty resistant to most elements, but, among other things, Fire-type attacks do double damage against it. Gyms and Gym Leaders are kind of like the Pokemon equivalent of end-of-level bosses; you work your way through an area, then go to the Gym in that region and beat the Gym Leader, which makes Pokemon of higher levels obey you and unlocks a new special move (that usually allows you to progress further somewhere). When you've beaten eight Gym Leaders, that unlocks the end-of-game boss, the Elite Four, and usually there's a "surprise" final fight after them (by which I mean, someone you've known the whole game suddenly reveals themself and challenges you to a battle for the Final Ultimate Victory, or whatever).

Pokemon is pretty formulaic really - that format hasn't been changed since the original game. The changes come in the new levels of detail they manage to add into each game - side contests, "secret bases" (which act kind of like Professor Layton's decorate-your-bedroom minigames), 2-on-2 battles, item-creation minigames, and so on. It's worth playing at least one - my favourite was Emerald, because it was the first I played and I still have nostalgia for "my" team (internet memes about Mudkips notwithstanding); there isn't a great deal of variety in the main storylines, though, so you may or may not feel the need to play the others depending on how addicted you get to 'catching them all'.

"I herd u liek mudkips" was apparently some phrase someone wrote on their DeviantArt page a long time ago as the caption for a picture of a Mudkip that they were using to advertise their Pokemon group, or something. Then 4chan caught onto it and apparently found it hilarious, and several years later, here we are.

Given it was my first ever Pokemon, though... I do liek like Mudkips. :P
