In part eight, which holds the record for the Youtube video with the most consecutive "W"s in it, the game reaches at least two of a series of several climaxes that it's going to go through over the next hour of gameplay. Almost uniquely, it also has us making a correct decision at one of the branch points - I made a slide to stick in for when we were saving, and it was just after I'd added it to the video that I remembered that virtually none of our audience will know what it's meant to represent.

“The point is, you see, that there is no point in driving yourself mad trying to stop yourself going mad. You might as well just give in and save your sanity for later.”

Even if you could, how much sanity could you have really had left if it fits on one of those, anyway?

It's times like this I wish my predecessor had actually bought up some 5½″ disks up along with a suitable drive. (He had plans to try to make a ZZT game sufficient in length to take two worlds, then release it on the lower-capacity 5½″ media, primarily for the purpose of being able to show off a high-class password mechanism and then legitimately ask the user to insert disk 2… I wonder whether it's too late to dust that off. Probably is. Hmm.)

I actually found two 5½″ floppy disks at the back of my wardrobe while cleaning it out yesterday. I remember saving them a long time ago, because I had strange notions that technology would somehow one day come full circle, and it'd be great to take them out and reminisce about when games could have only 8 colours and still be amazing. :P I don't have a drive, though, so barring any ouroboran tech-level time loops, I think I'm probably out of luck. :P

6:50 - the SALVATION bit - that's ... that's the Miracle Pigeon Light song. Which is actually kind of fitting, since both are fairly similar scenes. The fact that they are, though ... this is amazing. Does anyone fully appreciate what Moa has done here? She made a ridiculous parody of the "everyone bands together in a heartwarming display of camaraderie to overcome the bad guy" anime trope, and then played the same trope completely straight two chapters later, with the same theme and everything, and it still worked, even after she herself in the same game just got done making fun of it!

Granted there was some slight difference in execution (the former was a Spirit Bomb and the latter was The Cavalry) but still. I can't ... seriously, how is this not one of the most impressive feats of writing ever? I've seen big-budget movies that botched this idea and made it a blatant Deux ex Machina copout (such as Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Everyone is Always Saved at the Last Second by Everyone Else) but Moa was able to make it legitimately epic and moving and something I could get behind twice in the same game, despite one instance being a parody, and the other coming after it had been parodied!!

Miru and Kaku were part of the "all our friends show up and help out" montage both times, and it worked even in the serious one!

I ... how....

Moa spent the entire rest of the game moving the bar on expected sanity levels and such, just so that the setting would support this scene, didn't she? It couldn't have worked in a vacuum; it's just too ridiculous. Show me that scene out of context, and ask me to read things like "with a wink and a twink and a ho-ho-ho!" in the Christmas Thieves voice, and I can sum up my probable reaction as follows:

But ... in context, by the time we made it to that point, that wasn't what I was feeling at all. I had actually accepted it, and my reaction was more fist-pumping "YES, ALL OUR FRIENDS ARE HERE AND THEY'RE ALL AWESOME, THIS IS EPIC." Even Miru and Kaku--they were healing Sakuya! I was totally behind it. It was touching. I love this party.

Moa...!
