It's a little bit Legend of Zelda (primarily as far as controls go, if you don't count the ability to jump), a little bit Earthbound (in that things occasionally get a bit ridiculous and your primary weapon is a yo-yo.), and a little bit Indiana Jones. You'll probably be laughing your ass off and going "WHAT!?" at most of it. There's giant snakes, death traps, and many varieties of cola, just to name a few non-spoilerish things.
2 things you may not like is that later parts can get somewhat challenging, and about halfway through there's a bit of anti-piracy crap involving a letter that came with the instruction booklet...that part is rendered moot by the Internet, of course, but it's still a bit irritating.
