Surprise snakes! Which would be a bad thing under any other circumstances, but as the Megadrive version of Snake, Rattle ‘n’ Roll was mentioned on the videos that [livejournal.com profile] kjorteo and I did, I hunted it down and gave it a test to see if it was any less brutal. (Spoiler: I don’t complete it). This makes this game the most played in the Stumbling Through series by two iterations. I must be mad.

This was meant to be a very quick video, but I was pretty amazed by how far I got on one set of continues - perhaps the game is a little more forgiving, even though there are a couple of places which were either made more brutal or that I just didn’t remember.

It's interesting to note that under stress I seem to swear not by increasing the strength of my language but by concatenating various other words together to form physically impossibe hybrid strings.

“physically impossibe hybrid strings”—yes, I suppose so.

"Give me another, EASIER game next time..."

I guess maybe I should hold back my recommendation of the NES classic "Startropics," then?

Considering there isn't even a player two participating. . . poor Roll!!!!

The graphics are improved, but I'm still on the fence about if the music is actually better.

How did you make it that far????

I've always wanted to play Startropics, but never have . . for . . some reason. I feel like I know the game, having read the Nintendo Power articles possible a dozen times or more.

For the first few levels at least, the graphics are significantly improved to the point of greater recognisability - it actually looks like you're meandering around a grassy section at the bottom of a mountain. I was about to say that the original version had an otherworldy yellow, instead, and that would have trouble noticing the difference, but... looking back at the first two levels of the original, they were green too! Just less recognisably grassy. I'm glad I noticed that before incorrectly stating that it was a different colour and possibly making you paranoid about mis-identification.

Anyway, thank you for playing this version too. I have to say, while the original has its charm, I think I prefer this one. You got very far, also!

ohh!!! The first level takes place at the base of the mountain, and the levels progress as the player climbs up the mountain!!!! Even understanding it is all one large map, this somehow never occurred to me :o

It's a little bit Legend of Zelda (primarily as far as controls go, if you don't count the ability to jump), a little bit Earthbound (in that things occasionally get a bit ridiculous and your primary weapon is a yo-yo.), and a little bit Indiana Jones. You'll probably be laughing your ass off and going "WHAT!?" at most of it. There's giant snakes, death traps, and many varieties of cola, just to name a few non-spoilerish things.

2 things you may not like is that later parts can get somewhat challenging, and about halfway through there's a bit of anti-piracy crap involving a letter that came with the instruction booklet...that part is rendered moot by the Internet, of course, but it's still a bit irritating.

Speaking of the music, I'm vaguely reminded of virtually every pinball game that came out before digitized audio. The end-level "Amazing" screens are practically copy-and-paste sounds clips from the old-school electromechanical machines.
