There is a folder. Inside this folder is a huge collection of temporary subfolders, copies of files that I downloaded years ago, and various other seemingly useless 0-byte files with meaningless alphanumeric names. The folder is "Temp", and it is hidden away in Local Settings. Currently it is taking up 1.19GB of my hard disk space.

Working on the theory that it's better to ask and be a fool for a couple of minutes than not ask and be a fool for ruining my computer - can I delete this junk? The name of the folder (and my computer science sense) suggests that it's just leftover stuff from various things that were never deleted for one reason or another - that or an incredibly bloated cache - but is it remotely possible that Windows XP is using anything in there?

It seems doubtful. Also it is taking up so much space that it is unlikely it is part of the OS. Delete that sucker.

Incidentally, did you write this after you signed off IM to go to bed? I think it might be.

I'd use the word "Appalling" rather than "Impressive". What version of Windows are you using?

A cursory inspection could be useful to find forgotten gems of files though.

after getting the decent stuff out then you can either go to tools in your internet explorer window, then internet options. this gives you the chance to delete these files, your cookies and your history.

or, do what i do, select everything in the folder, deselect your favourite cookies, then hit delete.

nah, internet explorer doesn't delete the files in the TEMP folder, it only deletes the files in its on temporary internet files folder....because I do that all the time but I also have a TEMP folder with junk plus extra copies of all my art etc...

It is safe for you to delete
the contents of that folder.
But make sure that the job's complete
before it gets much older.
