We got the results of the house inspection back - the house is far less radioactive than had been anticipated, and its boiler is also several years further away from detonation than we first thought. So things are going quite well.

Tests for radon in house basements are conducted here by leaving two little vials of white stuff in the middle of the room for a couple of days, and then picking it up and seeing how much decayed radon has been absorbed. Our test worked out at 0.6 picoCuries per litre, which is a strange mixture of measurements, and also a tiny fraction of the safe level. The boiler, which was first thought to be in danger of needing replacement because of a bad heat exchanger, has just had a couple of parts replaced by an engineer - all I can make out from the scrawl on the report is that he replaced a thermocouple and a squiggle.

So with only a couple of other more minor electric fixes also being made, the purchase and sale agreement is underway, and tomorrow we're going in to start the application for the actual mortgage. That needs to be finished by May the 12th, and then we close the agreement on the 27th.

It struck me last night that every single person on my diagram from yesterday is taking the idea of me buying a house seriously. I find this profoundly terrifying.
