The Afflicted

kjorteo has completed the novel that he's been working on for the last four years. It's called The Afflicted, and it's available for sale with a free chapter on the Amazon Kindle store!
It's loosely a fantasy dystopia, following a group of survivors after an unknown disease spreads through the entire atmosphere as they try to survive against the elements and the hunters preventing the afflicted from approaching the few remaining cities. From the beginning you can tell it's definitely not a light and hopeful setting, but I got to read it as it was being written and it really captured me and made me care about the characters.
The anthropomorphic nature of the characters is interesting because it's not just used for the sake of it - it's fascinating when an author uses the animalistic details to colour the traits and behaviour of the characters, and here it's also thought about in the context of the residents of the city slums, in a form of fantasy species racism.
I know what it's like to finally finish a years-long project, and this definitely deserves your time. It's already inspired some music in me, and a couple of other projects as well...
