This is a warning from a (second-rate) web coder - if you're writing an offensive word filter so that your news site doesn't get a lot of emails from your ludicrously stuck-up conservative readers, make sure you know what you're doing first. Otherwise, you risk turning tragedy into comedy.

Former buttistant pastor pleads guilty to love crimes

Pittsburgh (AP) - A former buttistant pastor at a suburban Pittsburgh church pleaded guilty Monday to several love charges involving a 17-year-old girl, the Allegheny County district attorney said.

David Valencia, 49, pleaded guilty to one count each of involuntary deviate loveual intercourse, indecent buttault, endangering the welfare of children and corruption of minors, and three counts of unlawful contact with a minor.

After a hearing, he was sentenced to two to four years in state prison, followed by five years' probation. A county judge also ordered Valencia to be registered as a love offender. State officials will determine whether he should be clbuttified as a loveually violent predator.

(Incidentally I have no idea why this is on what appears to be a wine region site)

I assume it's a joke, making fun of incidents like this (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/sleuth/2008/07/christian_sites_ban_on_g_word.html), and one other incident that I remember but now cannot find where "the queen" was replaced with "Her Royal Majesty the Queen of England", even though the context was something like "in a typical ant colony, the queen can lift ten times her own weight".

Silly as it seems, it appears to be quite genuine - searching on Google for choice words like "clbuttic", "clbuttification" or the buttbuttination of Lincoln turns up straight-faced stories that have been transformed into unintentional gibberish. Although they could hardly have made this one better if they'd tried.

I saw the other examples of it too, but I assumed they were all just deliberate plays on the same idea. You probably couldn't make it through five articles before realizing that your filter shouldn't filter things in the middle of words; the idea might've originated from the first time someone tried, laughed at the result, and then fixed it, but I doubt any of these articles actually stayed up in that form except in the same kinds of places that people post this kind of 'email forward' humor.

I would have slightly more confidence that people ever actually looked at what they were putting up if it weren't for the existence of, say, Myspace. (First randomly chosen account from the photos on the front page.) Nevertheless, at best all the ones I found appear to be aggregator sites that just robotically take articles from elsewhere, apply the filter and broadcast the result without a care in the world.

If people are going to be so uptight about censorship that they apply oppressive, automatic filters instead of just, you know, being careful what they say, then they deserve to look stupid.
