While we should feel disappointed at any rejection of cultural evolution, I too would be more bothered if there was much evidence of things having gone better before - as it is it's no more distressing than, say, reading the latest DLY chapter. I think that, despite having been warned against it, I might have expected a bit too much after 2008 and was expecting this country to have things like universally available healthcare and other 20th century innovations immediately rather than the slow and agonizing compromise that everything seemed to have to go through anyway.
Here in Massachusetts, it seemed the Democrats held fast, although as you know this wasn't my responsibility - I was particularly surprised that the governor Deval Patrick stayed, because I thought he was pretty unpopular.
