Further biscuit supplies

Having been in sore need of some familiar comforts recently, I was amazed when this parcel arrived from my parents in addition to the Christmas presents that we knew they were sending over. It felt a lot heavier than it looked, because it was crammed to the brim with these:


These were added to the Fox range (terrible news channel - great biscuits, though) at some point in the last couple of years, and they're made of some sort of honeycomb-like substance with chocolate spread on one side. They, like most of their biscuits, are absolutely wonderful - and unlike the Creams, these ones have the added bonus that my weird friends can't make any dirty jokes about their name.

I think that really is a perfectly appropriate background music for something that looks like an alien lifeform! Watching it unburrow at the start is absolutely skin-crawling (and makes me feel like I have to use one of the tools to stop it breaking free if at all possible), but when he's right next to it, the urge to scream "Run! There's one on the rock right in front of you!" is overwhelming.

And then, during the mating itself, I have the most uncanny feeling that I'm watching Deftera combining. Aaaaagh.

I don't like crawling insects either, though oddly I am more all right with flying ones - there's something especially... wrong about the crawling thing being an unnatural bag of pulsing flesh. I tend to back off and become flustered whenever I see worms or snails as well (though at least snails have some semblance of... substance on their backs).

If I can relive my trauma for a moment, I think the fear might have come from one of these nature documentaries which I saw when I was very young, in which they showed a colony of ants surrounding a pale beige slug and just... tearing it to pieces.

See, that's why it's a fool's errand for me to try and make assumptions about what someone will like; when you get that far into "things that people respond to subconsciously", there's absolutely no proportion between the scope and the intensity of how the various rules are applied...

It's much easier to... have phobias and philias from the inside, rather than examining them in someone else, because then you don't have to understand them to experience what seems to line up :)

That, indeed, is a very good point, and one that occurred to me as I was writing that comment. I think I remember reacting with more revulsion to the slug even when I first saw it there, but I don't know where my instinct to be afraid of it came from. Like a lot of things at that stage, I had just assumed that it was something everyone had.

I think they're cute, personally. :) That mating video I just threw at you is creepy, but only because it uses fast-motion time-lapse shots that make everything creepy due to the wholly unnatural (uncanny?) speed and jerkiness of movement. The plants are creepy in that video, even.

Well, that would have been evil! I couldn't watch that after about forty seconds, just for the music and its unearthly high warbling noise... N is a consonant, N is for Night, N is an incantation that unlocks the gateway to insanity.

I made the mistake of listening to the first video's audio out of curiosity; I seriously just put the Ecco song back on to wash it out of my brain...

The Trauma Center boss music? That's actually one of the very few things in games that I know other people have said they were scared of, and that I never really had that reaction to - for me it's sort of so over the top that it becomes slightly funny. Having heard the DS interpretation of a choir sound first might have helped with it...

Oh yes, that... I didn't listen to a whole lot of it, but it did have a rather unpleasant feeling of being constantly shouted at.

The best part is how it only took a sequel for them to figure out that the DS actually can do a convincing choir, complete with what sounds like actual lyrics, though I can't figure any of them out beyond what sounds like "the Aletheia" at the very beginning.

I still think that that's the most amazing piece of music that I've ever seen coming out of a handheld. And I know that it isn't even... impressive on a technical level, these days - you could easily just throw an MP3 on there and have a codec to play anything at all - but alongside music that tends to be kept slightly lower-fidelity for space reasons (or in Etrian Odyssey's case, because they know how amazing it sounds in its own way), it makes the grandeur of it stand out all the more.

"The Aletheia will be"... "waiting"... "with a"... "mug of metal"... it's so indistinct that I can't even mishear anything funny out of it, but I don't think it's meant to be English.
