Here's another short video I put together last night after Quadralien mentioned this game to me. I should have known better. This is Sonic: Omochao Edition by Cinnosu, starring the hateful little tutorial-spewing robot from Sonic Generations.

I've got to say that even though its purpose is to make your life difficult, this is an excellent mod - the term "romhack" conjures up images of badly-stapled-together Speedy Gonzales game modifications done in Russian basements, but the author made an actual quality game out of this, building a whole scoring system around the spoof mechanic. I'm now tempted to actually see how well I can do...

After viewing your playthrough of the game and looking at the still-frame YouTube chose for the preview, I figured a slight update was in order.

There you go.

So was the “Say ‘gah!’ indeed” a deliberate mutation, or was that mainly an artifact of the way your accent handles diphthongs?

You were! Just in a particular way which sounded like it was meant to be clever and meaningful in that one might well indeed say “gah” at this romhack. I guess not? I suppose maybe that's the Anglicization of it in the US as well—at least, Wikipedia thinks so, which surprises me a bit seeing as I vaguely thought that kind of intense diphthongization was more common in northern Britain (and the southern US, but I doubt you'd have adopted that)…

Listen carefully to the difference in the "e" between your own speech and the ROM recording if you're curious.
