That, indeed, does sound like rather more of a "Why?" than the actual idea... you would think they were mapped to the remote buttons, but the inclusion of the special ones at the top makes me think that it has to be scrolled around with a cursor - so at that stage, why not select from a full keyboard?
Because everyone loves cycling through letters, numbers, and symbols. They seem to be under the impression that the prevalence of mobile phone texting and the buttons that are used for it somehow makes people abhor any system of greater ease. Clearly, the average consumer is just completely baffled by keyboard layouts. "Qwerty... what does that mean???" Cue them throwing the remotes in frustration and then using their mobile phones to twitter about the injustice of it all.
