If only it weren't shooting the messenger, I'd suggest just walking in there and whipping a penny at them. :P (But I doubt whatever computer made the demand would feel the appropriate shame.)

I should perhaps say that we also got another cheque from them for a significant amount more, so the journey wasn't entirely wasted :) This one was from our savings account which we'd emptied beforehand... I think that the cent it still registered there was just to mark that the account still existed, or something.

Oh, shoot -- I thought they were saying that you owed THEM a cent before they would let you close the account... well, it's still silly, but less hair-pulling this way ;)

Yes, I thought that was just quite funny (the woman at the desk just handed me a cent, but I got the paper copy of the confirmation anyway...) I thought the greater problem was really Whitney's re-christening on it (although I don't really find it any less hilarious, shh :X )

Her name had been correctly spelled up until now! This was just a mistake that the hurried woman at the bank made, and not a direct response from the bank to us always phoning them up to ask if they'd got their act together with our mortgage yet.

Although I do remember that one bank in Scotland had my middle name down as "Kennedy" for ages and I never bothered correcting it...

Ahh, I had assumed it was just printed out by a computer and mailed to you... I'm getting this whole thing wrong. :P

Man, middle names are such a weird idea anyway ;) I never knew what to think of it when I was a kid; "we've given you this third name also, but nobody will ever ask you for it, and you'll never be able to use it anywhere."

I'm unsure - the extent to which we researched banks on arrival here was pretty much just walking up to the main road and saying "There's one - that'll do". And they were very good to us for a long time until they caused us a great deal of stress with our home mortgage, which is why we're transferring our funds out now.

That's even better than our check from the state of Georgia, paying us for interest on our tax return - it was less than the cost of the postage to send it to us (and when you factor in employee time and materials, even more ridiculous).

At least, like in this case, they were giving you a payment rather than spending those vast amounts of money trying to get you to pay a few cents. In the collection of newspaper cuttings that I had up on my wall in university, there's one about someone being summoned to court by a computer that noticed she had underpaid her gas bill by four pence.
